Sol from Alexandria Virginia

Band/Resource Name : Sol
Band/Resource Rep Name : 9th Floor Music

Take two scoops of Funk; throw in a heathly serving of Reggae; stir in a few large cups of deep Piedmont Blues; throw in a pinch of Latin Flavor for spice, and top it off with some Old School R&B. Shake it up and you've got the music of Sol. A venerable pan stew of groove.

Sol leads a collaboration of musicians from the southeast and mid-atlantic US. Sol and his band members are no strangers to the road.

Sol has covered much of the surface of the earth on tour, lighting up venues across North America, Europe, Australia and the Caribbean.

Sol has shared the stage with blues heavyweights such as Taj Mahal, BB King, Cootie Starks, Cool John Ferguson, John Dee Holeman, Robert Randolph, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Derek Trucks and others.

Paying homage to the greats, Sol seeks to bring Roots Music to a new generation of listeners.

Sol's CD release entitled Freedom, features the core musical unit of Sol on guitar and vocals, King George on drums, and Jake D on bass. Also guest appearances by Tim Smith (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Hobex, and Countdown Quartet), as well as members of VA’s reggae groups the Seed and the Alliens. With these special guests, the new album moves from greasy delta grooves to deep reggae, and from stanky funk to soulful R&B.

Here's what some reviewers are saying about the new CD Freedom:

"one of the top 15 CD's of 2008!"- Green Arrow Radio (created by the Funk Soul Music Director at WHUS) placed the album alongside Sean Costello, Taj Mahal, Bill Laswell, PBS, Marcus Miller & more in top picks of 2008!

“Sol is excellent at morphing rock, blues, soul, and reggae, taking it all to a different level and contributing to the evolution of music into- quoting Sly Stone- 'a whole new thing'. Freedom is a great example of this band’s music and a truly enjoyable listening experience”- Len Comaratta- WUVT Music Director

"Sol pulls together funk, soul, blues and reggae elements...

Sol uses his right hand fingers, not a pick, to get his bluesy, dirty-sweet solo lines, and he delivers the raw and tasteful in even helpings....

You have to admire a blues/soul singer who is trying to sound like himself, instead of some old blues guy... Good Party Music... " - Tad Dickens- Press Review

"Sol pours out his heart and soul on Freedom. A must have for any music collection" - Wes Lee- Locals Only Radio (Washington DC area)

GRANDPA EDDIES BBQ - Venue Review

GRANDPA EDDIES BBQ
11129 THREE CHOPT ROAD
RICHMOND, VA 23233
804-270-7427

Submitted by Cindy Johnson

Do you like Barbeque? Do you like live music? Grandpa Eddies, located in the West End offers the best of the two. On Friday and Saturday nights, for no cover charge, you can watch live bands from 8:30 pm to around midnight.

The restaurant caters to down home Southern cooking including fried okra, three types of cole slaw to go with the three types of barbeque, and the best brisket I have ever eaten.

The bands that have played Grandpa Eddies range from rockabilly to blues to country and are all appropriate for the whole family, something which is very important to the owner of Grandpa Eddies, proving you can have G-rated fun, along with impressive draft beer.

So bring your appetite with you or you will wish you had because Grandpa Eddies is all about family, food, live music and fun!

TRIPLE THREAT - Our First Venue Review

A REVIEW OF THE TRIPLE BILLIARDS BAR LOCATED AT
3306 WEST BROAD STREET, RICHMOND, VA 23230 804-359-7777

Submitted by Elvistra

The Triple, located across from the Channel 6 News Station on W. Broad Street, has come a long way in the last few months. The term “pool hall” might be a little dated, but the Triple, previously known as “The Triple Triangle” has no intention of abandoning its roots. It started as a billiards room complete with neon sign above the door in the shape of brightly colored pool balls and has not changed much apart from the fact that it is quickly becoming THE place to go to see live bands perform.

Community Chest Booking, run by Danny Ingram and Tiffany Cale, are responsible for booking all the local and national acts that perform at the Triple and it is not unusual to see two or three bands in one evening. The cover is always minimal and considering the quantity and quality of the entertainment, you are getting a major deal.

The atmosphere is also pleasant to the eye thanks to local art displayed on the walls to promote local artists who want to show and sell their art. I have had several friends show there and it is a wonderful way to support artists.

Then, you can always play pool. The back room is spacious and filled with pool tables and eager pool players. It is unusual to see an empty table until very late in the evening.

So, there is your “Triple Threat”, music, art and billiards. Take your pick or enjoy them all. The bar ain’t bad either. The bar staff is wonderful and friendships are made early on if you are a regular, which I have to say, I have become. The door men give me a hug and the bartenders brilliantly know what I want before I ask for it. It’s a win win situation people. I heart The Triple. You will too.
